Heinan Landa
Born in Israel, Heinan Landa made the trip to the States at the ripe old age of two. Here his parents built a successful instrumentation company, which they just recently sold after almost forty years in business.
After earning his B.S. and M.S. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from Johns Hopkins University, Heinan went on to receive his MBA from The Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. As fate would have it, it was an assignment for one of his classes at Wharton that prompted him to develop the idea—and even construct a business plan—for his future technology services firm.
When Heinan graduated, he immediately set out to make his business plan a reality. He set up shop in one of his parents’ vacant offices, hung up a self-constructed banner that read “Optimal Networks,” and began calling organizations to gauge their interest in managed network support services.
While he was soon able to find a handful of clients and hire an employee, it was difficult not to feel defeated as a twenty-eight-year-old newlywed, living in an apartment with more than $100,000 in debt and drawing an annual salary of $35,000. But when he came home from work one night, more tempted than ever to throw in the towel, his wife was elated as she gave him the good news: he was going to be a father! (AHH!)
After some serious thought, this defining moment prompted him to commit 100 percent to the success of Optimal Networks. His plan? Immerse himself in the area he was struggling: sales.
The next year, Optimal hit the $1 million mark.
